Claudia Beamish, Scottish Labour and Co-operative Westminster candidate for Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale chaired the Scottish Labour Conference on Saturday, welcoming delegates from all over Scotland to the Imax, Glasgow. Claudia introduced Prime Minister Gordon Brown who unveiled Scottish Labour’s General Election pledges - “Secure the recovery. Raise family living standards. Build a high tech economy. Protect frontline services. Strengthen fairness in communities.”
Claudia highlighted WWF’s “Earth Hour” to delegates and the importance of showing we are all determined to play our part in protecting the planet and its people. She said, “It is the responsibility of a Labour Government and our movement both to do our best to protect those locally and globally who are least able to adapt to climate change and to work to slow it down in ways that develop new, sustainable employment.”
In her welcome to delegates, Claudia congratulated the most recently selected Westminster candidates, of whom several are young women. She asked those attending to remember the importance of encouraging women and young people to come forward for selection as candidates for the 2012 local government elections. As Chair for the last year, one of her priorities has been to further develop Scottish Labour women’s representation. A South of Scotland Labour Women’s Forum was recently set up with this in mind.
