Elaine Murray MSP Deputy Shadow spokesperson on the Environment and our local member, Sarah Boyack MSP Shadow Spokesperson for the Environment and Climate Change, and myself, visited Steven's Croft wood fired power station near Lockerbie, in the constituency. It is the largest biomass power station in the UK.
The site is owned by E.ON UK and supplies the needs of 70,000 homes. It also displaces roughly 140,000 te of greenhouse gases, creates local jobs and makes use of rotation coppice in the fuel mix, bringing agricultural work to the area.
We were shown round by Rob Lowe the plant manager. I was very impressed and will want to support further such developments if I go to Westminster.
We also visited the Eco Deco Recycling Plant at Lochar Moss Dumfries. The day ended at the Crichton Carbon Centre to discuss low carbon options for a sustainable future with the staff there.
